The Process

A Frontier Designer Barn Home begins with the vision of its homeowner. Working with us, the homeowner creates a unique Timber Frame that fits both their lifestyle and site attributes. Once the size of the structure, and types of timbers are determined (hand-hewn, rough-sawn, or planed), we will custom design your Timber Frame bunkie, addition, barn or home using the desired timbers and provide a 3D drawing, allowing you to better visualize what your Timber Frame project will look like. Once a design has been determined we will have the architectural and engineering drawings created which are then submitted to your local building department for approval. Once a building permit has been issued your local contractor is able to start on your foundation, at which time we are ready to start the milling of your timber frame!
If reclaimed timbers are being used we will prepare the timbers by cleaning them, removing any metal such as nails and bolts and inspect them for strength and aesthetics. The timbers are then notch using traditional timber frame joinery and marked using a code that is followed on site to ensure an efficient raising. After all the mill work is finished, the timbers are treated to specifications (stained, planned etc.)
and then checked again to ensure accurate and precise construction on the site. The frame is then wrapped and put away until shipment and final assembly, at which time the timber frame is raised by a Frontier Designer Barn Home crew, and finished by a local contractor.
